Our favourite kitchen gadgets

Making a cookbook is not that different from making a great dish – it requires a few crucial ingredients. For HABIT those are the machines and accessories we relied on over and over again developing and refining our recipes. Here are the ones we can’t cook without.

Kitchen Aid Classic Series mixer

We mostly use the mixer to make cookies, doughs and crusts, but with extra attachments it speeds up food prep. It’s a huge time saver. Like the Vitamix below, it’s a workhorse that’s worth the splurge.

Vitamix 5200 Blender

From grinding almonds into flour to creaming nuts for our Cashew Base, this is the piece of equipment we rely on for the hard jobs. We’ve had it since we were married more than 20 years ago and it’s still running strong.

Lodge Dutch Oven

A heavy pot is vital for browning meats and slow cooking soups. We’ve found the Lodge brand cast iron to be as good as Le Creuset (which we got as wedding presents) but much less money.

Instant Zest rice cooker

An affordable energy saver that has never mis-cooked rice or quinoa. It just quietly and quickly does its job, so we can focus on everything else.

Zulay Kitchen juicer

We’ve tried just about every possible technique for juicing lemons and limes and this hand press is by far the simplest and smoothest one we’ve tried. The best part is that it strains out the seeds.

Kamado Joe Charcoal Grill

Charcoal makes tastier barbecue. And an egg style charcoal grill makes smoking and slow cooking possible in a way no gas grill can match. The results are worth the extra time and effort required.
